The Outer Hebrides are a narrow 200km long chain of islands, lying 65km off the northwest coast of the Scottish mainland. Unlike Skye and the Inner Hebrides, tourism here is of far less importance to the local economy and the islands remain remote in every sense. A further 60km west of the Outer Hebrides across the perilous Atlantic Ocean, lie the spectacular and islotated islands of St Kilda, Scotland's first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
